Eaton Introduces "Lightning Series" Transmission

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 10/1/1999

Eaton Corp. has introduced a new heavy-duty transmission. The "Lightning Series" transmission's design reflects the company's initiative to meet and exceed the growing demand for lighter, more reliable, and more driver-friendly manual transmissions.

The Lightning Series unit weighs about 120 pounds less than the transmission model it replaces. To reduce the unit's weight, Easton moved away from "front box/back box" architecture to a single integrated gear package with main and auxiliary countershafts sharing the same axial centerline and support bearings. The transmission is also more than 4 inches shorter than its predecessor, which in combination with a standardized length for all future torque capacity 10-speeds, simplifies installation for truck OEMs.

The Lightning transmission is equipped with two 6-bolt PTO (power take-off) provisions that have been rotated downward to eliminate interference with suspension or exhaust components. The transmission also features an on-board Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that communicates with the engine via a datalink; all-helical gearing that reduces in-cab noise for driver comfort; and an internal oil-to-water heat exchanger that uses engine coolant to maintain transmission lubricant at the ideal operating temperature regardless of driving or climate conditions.
