By Staff -- Logistics Management, 11/1/1999
The nation's railroads have shown marked improvement in their safety performance over the last several years, even while some high-profile accidents may create a different perception. The 1998 Railroad Safety Statistics Annual Report, issued by the Federal Railroad Administration, shows that from 1997 to 1998, the railroads had a 27-percent reduction in employee fatalities and a 33-percent reduction in passenger fatalities. Highway-rail incidents dropped by 9 percent, and highway-rail injuries by 15 percent. From 1993 to 1998, while train miles increased by 11 percent, employee fatalities dropped by 43 percent and passenger deaths by 93 percent.
