Trucking was profitable in 1998
By Staff -- Logistics Management, 11/1/1999
Trucking was profitable in 1998, according to an analysis of 1,523 trucking companies by Transportation Technical Services. Those carriers achieved a 2.8-percent profit margin in 1998. That's nowhere close to the margins that truckers would like to see, although TTS views the results as robust. The carriers reported gains in revenues of 9.7 percent, ahead of cost increases of 9.4 percent. The carriers' operating ratio--operating costs as a percentage of operating revenue--improved to 94.82 from 95.08. TTS reports annually on carrier financial performance in its TTS Blue Book of Trucking Companies.
