Manufacturers of industrial equipment will face higher materials and labor costs next year. Although direct manufacturing costs generally fell in 1999, prices, for the most part, did not. That means machinery and equipment producers, on average, enjoyed a deflation-related boost to margins last year. As a result, industrial-equipment producers will not be under pressure to raise prices very quickly next year.
