- The Canadian-American Border Trade Alliance's annual Washington conference, scheduled for Sept. 23–25 in Washington, D.C., will offer importers and exporters a unique opportunity to participate in briefings on trade, transportation, and border management developments affecting U.S.-Canada trade. Confirmed speakers include Michael Kergin, Canada's ambassador to the United States, and Earl Warren, special projects director for Canada's Customs and Revenue Agency. A highlight will be a visit to Capitol Hill, where participants will meet with border state congressmen and senators, including members of the Senate finance and appropriations committees. - Livingston International has launched its "NAFTAdvantage" consulting service for shippers in the United States and Canada. The service includes a review of compliance processes, validation of harmonized tariff classifications, oversight of certificates of origin from suppliers, and customized training programs. NAFTAdvantage also helps clients ensure they have information required for customs audits. - Canadian National Railway has provided funding to
endow the new CN Chair in Transportation and International Logistics at the
University of British Columbia (UBC). The railroad's CDN $1.25 million gift
will establish an interdisciplinary program that will focus on research and
teaching in the fields of transportation, logistics, and supply chain
management. In recognition of the impact transportation has on local
environments, the program will also encompass studies in land-use planning and
community decision-making.
- NAFTA Notes: Consolidated Freightways (CF) has named Brian Casey to the position of general director of CF Alfri-Loder, the LTL carrier's joint venture in Mexico. Casey will be responsible for overseeing operations, sales, marketing, and administration throughout Mexico. BAX Global has appointed Ross Burnett managing director of operations in Mexico. Previously head of Yellow Freight's Mexican business, Burnett will oversee BAX's planned expansion in that country. Milan Express Co. of Milan, Tenn., and Toronto, Ont.-based Muir's Cartage have entered into a strategic partnership that will allow both companies to provide direct service between all points in Canada and Milan's service areas in the U.S. Midwest and Southeast. Canada Maritime and OOCL have commissioned three 4,100-TEU ice-strengthened and winterized container ships for their joint Montreal-Europe service. Third-party logistics company Megasys has opened an office in Monterrey, Mexico, to coordinate logistics needs for client Hussmann Corp. Canadian National has completed implementation of the Responsible Care chemical safety program at all of its Canadian facilities.
