Symbol introduces RSS reader
Symbol Technologies Inc. has introduced a line of bar-code readers that can decode the new Reduced Space Symbology (RSS) codes currently being promoted by the UCC/EAN standards organization. The Cobra LS 1900 Series laser bar-code readers can decipher the RSS symbol, which can encode extended product information such as variable weights, prices, and dates.
This Cobra line of readers can be configured for either scanning or for contact bar-code reading. The readers, which come with advanced data formatting (ADF) capabilities and flash memory, will also have such design enhancements as a large, bright two-color LED and an adjustable volume beeper for strong visual and audible feedback on decodes. The unit has a curved rubber nose for easy scan beam orientation.

Printronix unveils fast line matrix printer
The latest line matrix printer from Printronix—the Model P5220—sustains continuous draft printing at 2,000 lines per minute, according to the manufacturer. Printronix says the line matrix technology is ideal for handling specialized applications such as data reports, labeling applications, and multi-part forms.
The printer comes equipped with software that provides total printer control in enterprise networks. In fact, the company says its "PrintNet Plus" program enables the remote administration of Printronix printers from a single desktop anywhere in the world. A new feature immediately alerts users by pager or e-mail if a printer problem arises, eliminating lost productivity.

Locking System Safeguards Trailers
TrailerTrooper from Innovative Transportation Products (ITP) is a tamper-resistant trailer locking system designed to immobilize a trailer.
The system secures a trailer by locking the dolly legs in the down position after the trailer is parked. TrailerTrooper, which is available in different lengths and axle shaft sizes to fit most types of dolly legs, does not require removal and storage when not in use and can be engaged and disengaged in seconds. It also permits locks to be "keyed alike," meaning an entire fleet can use the same key.
The TrailerTrooper is constructed of 14-gauge steel and features a 5/16-inch yoke with a five-pin locking system.

Software Takes Charge of Protective Packaging
Ranpak Corp. has introduced the PAL (Packaging Automated Logistics) System. PAL, a Windows-based software application intended to bring system automation to the protective packaging market, integrates with Ranpak's AutoPad machines, which convert rolls of multi-ply kraft paper into lightweight cushions used to protect product shipped in boxes. The software establishes a centralized pack instruction database and displays detailed specifications on how to pack each item as it comes down the line. It then prompts the converter to generate the appropriate pads. The system tracks activity and creates productivity reports, updating inventories and monitoring all functions of the converters.
The PAL System is also able to exchange data with compatible warehouse management or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
