Intermec offers mobile logistics solution

Intermec has unveiled its "i-gistics" suite of hardware and software for pickup and delivery fleet operations. The vendor says the combination of hardware and software offers a mobile solution that provides for shipment tracking, ensures on-time delivery, and handles inventory and financial management tasks.

The suite includes dispatch application software that resides on a server. That software provides a Windows-based graphical user interface that displays all order and customer information on one screen.

In addition, the suite provides application software that resides on drivers' mobile computers and provides real-time tracking of shipments and proof-of-delivery information over wide-area wireless networks or batch processing. A built-in bar-code–scanning option is available. Also included in the suite is a mobile management system that provides communication between mobile devices and enterprise software systems.

The software suite is designed to work with Intermec's 6110, 600, and 700 series of mobile handheld computers. These computers offer delivery drivers real-time wireless communication devices with PC performance.

Clip-on radio links printers to scanners

Zebra Technologies Corp. has unveiled the Zebra Portable Radio, which wirelessly connects mobile printers to handheld bar-code scanners. The short-range frequency "clip-on" device enables wireless communication between Zebra's mobile printers and Symbol's SPT 1700/1800 (Palm operating system) and PPT2700/2800 (Windows CE operating system) handheld devices.

The portable radio provides connectivity at 916 MHz or 2.4 GHz frequencies with a range of up to 30 feet in direct line of sight or 10 feet through a user's body. When attached to a handheld terminal, the radio adds less than one-quarter of a pound of weight to a handheld terminal.

Laser helps reduceproduct damage

The LT-100 Laser-Tracker fromBeacon Technology Inc. is designed to eliminate product damage caused by forklift handling. The unit consists of a Class IIIa industrial laser, inserted into a protective metal housing unit and attached to the heel of the forklift. When aimed, the laser displays a bright, visible 3- to 4-inch horizontal line that is in alignment with the tips of the forks and serves as a guide for the operator. Once the laser beam disappears from view, the correct pallet opening and fork alignment has been found.

The Laser-Tracker LT-100 model features the use of infrared transmitter/receiver technology, which allows the operator to turn the laser on and off at specific heights to avoid direct contact with co-workers' eyes.
