Your turn

Peter Bradley, Editor in Chief -- Logistics Management, 4/1/2002

This month, we bring you our annual salary survey report, always one of the most anticipated and best-read features of the magazine. The news this year is mixed, weighted toward good. Salaries overall are up, despite the downturn in the economy that hit many businesses so hard last year. But respondents to the survey tell us that they're working harder than ever to earn that paycheck. That news comes as no surprise, recession or not. Workloads are increasing in every profession, and logistics is no exception.

The salary survey story is out of the ordinary in that it represents a major, once-a-year research effort for us. But it is typical of what we try to do here at Logistics Management & Distribution Report in that it's part of our month-to-month effort to bring you information about your profession that will give you a broader understanding of logistics management trends and provide information that will help you do your job a little better. In each issue, we attempt to bring a good mix of stories that touch on many of the diverse responsibilities of logistics and supply chain managers. Take the stories in this month's magazine. In addition to the salary survey results, which help you determine where you stand in relation to your peers, several other features address important topics in logistics management. For instance, the story on private fleets, beginning on page 37, describes how logistics managers with fleet management responsibilities justify maintaining a business fleet to sometimes skeptical senior management. Our logistics technology piece, starting on page 43, takes a fresh look at application service providers—what's caught on with shippers and what hasn't. And in our global logistics feature, we report on how an old importers' standby—the foreign trade zone—offers improved benefits to shippers thanks to recent regulatory changes. In addition, our Up Front pages and our News & Analysis section bring you information from the front lines of logistics management, and our columnists provide fresh insight on business developments and practices.

So, how are we doing? We hear regularly from many of our readers, but we'd like to hear from more of you. Are the features and news stories relevant to what you're doing? From your perspective, are they accurate and helpful? Are we missing or giving too little attention to some topics? Spending too much time on others? Are the stories detailed enough, too short, too long? What do you like best about the magazine? What bothers you about it?

An important part of our perpetual effort to improve this magazine is learning what business issues our readers face day to day. Please let us know what you think of individual stories, the magazine as a whole, and what we can do better. Write to me personally at pbradley@cahners.com or at 275 Washington St., Newton, MA 02458 or fax me your thoughts at (617) 558-4480. I'll make sure the rest of the staff knows what you're thinking.

This is your magazine, and we invite you to help us make it better.
