Staff -- Logistics Management, 11/1/2002
The Council of Logistics Management (CLM) presented its Distinguished Service Award to Donald J. Schneider, chairman of Schneider National Inc., at its annual meeting last month in San Francisco. Schneider became the 37th person to receive this award, which is given to an individual for achievement in logistics.
Schneider started with the family business that bears his name during his high school years. In 1961, he joined the company as manager and succeeded his father as president in 1974. During his tenure, Schneider National has grown into a $2.4 billion provider of transportation and logistics solutions.
In bestowing the award on Schneider, CLM noted that he has emphasized technological leadership in transportation as a way of adding value to a customer's product. A key proponent of improving productivity for his customers, he has also lobbied and spoken at congressional hearings about raising truck size and weight limits.
In other news, Miami University professor Thomas W. Speh became the new president of the industry organization. Elijah Ray, senior vice president at Standard Corp. Integrated Logistics, was chosen first vice president. Mark Richards, a vice president at Associated Warehouses Inc., became the second vice president.
