  • Gary Nichols has been named Transportation Person of the Year for 2003–2004 by the Delta Nu Alpha (DNA)

    transportation organization. Nichols, director of business development for truckload carrier Contract Freighters Inc., received the award for outstanding service to the group as well as to the logistics and transportation industry. He is a past president of the group and previously received the Maxwell Powell Award, DNA's highest honor for members.Canadian Pacific Railway has won the 2003 Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences. The railroad received the award for switching CPR's operations to a fixed-schedule basis, rather than tonnage-based dispatching. Doing so reduced the company's cost base by $285 million while making service more reliable and increasing profitability. Other transportation-industry winners included UPS Air Group

    (second place) and Menlo Worldwide Forwarding (finalist).

  • Triple Crown Services Company has been named Owens Corning's "North America 2002 Intermodal Carrier of the Year." The company was honored for its on-time performance and 15 years of service excellence. Triple Crown, a division of the Norfolk Southern Railroad, uses RoadRailer trailers to combine over-the-road and rail transportation.

  • The National Private Truck Council (NPTC) recently recognized several members for safe operations. The first place winners were: Local operation, small fleet, Barnes & Noble; regional operation, small fleet, Jerico Services Inc.; regional operation, large fleet, Milliken & Co.;

    mixed operation, small fleet, George's Foods LLC; mixed operation, large fleet, Dynergy Midstream Services L.P. Exel

    has been named by General Motors

    as a "Supplier of the Year" for providing outstanding supply chain services. The awards are based on recommendations by GM engineering, manufacturing, and logistics executives.

  • United Parcel Service received the American Business Award for technological achievements at its Worldport air hub in Louisville, Ky. The award was given for Worldport's technology, which boosted handling capabilities to more than 300,000 packages per hour and conducts shipments through the 4 million-square-foot facility in as few as 8 minutes.

  • Dart Warehouse Corporation was named a "Service Organization Winner" by Sears, Roebuck & Co.

    Dart received the award for making significant contributions to the growth of Sears' businesses and for developing better ways to serve Sears' customers.
