Itshould go without saying that for warehouse workers to take full advantage of theirsoftware systems they need training. When it comes to providing training, though, companies have threechoices: hire the software vendor to do the instruction, train a warehouse worker to become the in-house trainer, or contract with anoutside firm like a consultant to provide the teaching. Wal-Mart Stores will roll out its RFIDprogram to 600 stores and 12 distributioncenters by December 2005, its Chief Information Officer Linda Dillman said atthe RFID World conference and exhibition earlier this month. The RFID programrequires suppliers to mark their pallets and cases with radio frequencyidentification (RFIDS) tags. The program will grow from 100 to 200 suppliers byyear’s end, Dillman added. When she spoke on March 2, Dillman said that thegiant retailer had received 23,753 tagged pallets at its three Texasdistribution centers, which are pioneering its deployment of RFID.
An action group will meet next month inBrussels to develop EPC standards for logistics, EPC GlobalPresident Michael Meranda said at RFID World. Formed a year and half ago, EPC Globalestablishes RFID standards and promotes their worldwide adoption. The agenda for meeting involves identifying and setting priorities for theuse of EPC technology in transportation and logistics industry. The meeting is scheduled for April12-14.
