Average prices for shipping freight on inbound ocean liners finally dipped in December, falling 5.7% from November levels. But that wasn't enough to offset the inflationary wave that swamped shippers last year. Looking at the entire water transportation industry, which includes ocean shipping, river transportation, and auxiliary marine services, we see that average prices rose 8.8% in 2000. This is in line with the 8.7% hike recorded in 1999 but represents a continued sharp climb from the 3.0% hike reported in 1998 and the 0.4% decline seen in 1997.
