Voice technology ready for future
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/9/2007
After 20 years, voice recognition technology is coming into its own in the supply chain and finding new uses, said Larry Sweeney, vice president and cofounder of Vocollect (Booth 1013).
"Voice provides real time, on-the spot directing of operators and data capture," said Sweeney. "Industry growth is being driven by the need for more accurate data capture."
Voice recognition technology literally talks people through tasks, replacing cumbersome lists and traditional data capture methods with hands-free, personal voice dialogs. Voice solutions keep the path of product flow running smoothly.
While voice technology was first adopted by labor intensive industries like wholesale grocery, growth is expected to come from new areas. With an eye on the future, Sweeney said, "We anticipate applying our technology to the healthcare field. Where else is it more important to ensure that a list of tasks is accurately administered and the data documented."
Sweeney also foresees voice and other data capture technologies, like RFID, working together for increased productivity.
