Hybrid-engine walk-in van chassis debuts

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 2/1/2007

Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation’s (FCCC) hybrid-electric, walk-in van chassis is the first of its kind in the medium-duty truck industry, the manufacturer says. The new vans feature hybrid-engine technology developed and introduced by FCCC, Eaton, and Detroit Diesel.

Built on FCCC’s MT-45 SR chassis platform, the vans have shown a 50 percent improvement in fuel economy and a significant reduction in emissions.

Lithium-ion batteries capture and store energy during the “regenerative braking” phase of the vehicle’s operation. This design ensures that a constant source of stored electrical power is available on demand. The battery is charged through the powertrain, so no electrical cord or plug-in is needed.
