DHL opens international gateway in Mexico

Staff -- Logistics Management, 6/13/2007

PLANTATION, Fla.—Express delivery and logistics services provider DHL said today it has opened a new international gateway in Hermosillo, Mexico, which will offer international next-day service and enable the company to meet the growing needs of companies shipping freight between Northwest Mexico and the United States.

The DHL Hermosillo Gateway operates daily flights between Hermosillo and Phoenix, and all northbound shipments will be routed through Phoenix to DHL’s main air and ground hub in Wilmington, Ohio.

DHL said that the new service enables next-day delivery for shipments up to 150 pounds from Hermosillo to the entire U.S. network. It also provides for second-day delivery to and from Guaymas, Ciudad Obregon, Navojoa, Empalme and other local areas, as well as late shipment cutoff times for international deliveries from the region. DHL also noted that this service will benefit shippers moving high value automotive parts, electronics, textiles, medical devices, and other products manufactured and produced in Mexico.

DHL ACQUIRES STAKE IN ASTAR AIR CARGO
DHL also announced this week it has acquired a 49% minority equity interest and a 24.9% voting interest in Miami-based ASTAR Air Cargo.

And DHL also extended its contract with the air carrier through 2019. Financial terms were not disclosed.

DHL Express CEO Hans Hickler said in a statement that this investment represents another major commitment to the U.S. market by DHL, as it continues to deliver on its “strategy to provide a compelling alternative in the domestic express delivery market.”
