Intermec adds programs to its 6651 handheld PC

Intermec Technologies Corp. has begun shipping its 6651 notepad computer in a version that supports the Microsoft Handheld PC 2000 software suite. Based on the Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 operating system, H/PC 2000 devices like the 6651 include an integrated client for Windows 2000 Terminal Services, a Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0-compatible browser, a Windows Media Player for digital music, an e-mail client, pocket versions of the desktop Office applications, and personal information manager functionality.

The 6651 unit features a 7.1-inch active matrix LCD screen that displays 64K colors. Its built-in digital camera has a 350,000 pixel CMOS imaging sensor to capture still images as well as short video clips.

Based on Toshiba's powerful 129 Mhz MIPS processor, the unit comes standard with 32 MB RAM and a lithium ion battery pack that recharges in only 2.5 hours. It has both PC Card and Compact Flash capabilities. The 6651, which also has VGA/Serial, IrDA, and USB ports for device connections, carries a suggested retail price of $1,495.

Long-range tag designed for warehousing

Texas Instruments Radio Frequency Identification Systems has unveiled an ultra-high-frequency RFID technology to provide long read range for ID systems used in large warehouses. The new Tag-it UFH transponder and reader operate in the 902-928 MHz range.

Texas Instruments says that incoming and outgoing cartons, pallets, and containers equipped with its UHF transponders can be identified from stationary antennas that cover the typical 10-foot-wide warehouse loading dock. The new system enables the simultaneous identification of multiple tags.

20/20V promises better fleet visibility

Track Communications Inc. has unveiled 20/20V, a global positioning satellite (GPS) tracking device that offers fleet managers enhanced truck, load, and driver location visibility. The 20/20V provides nationwide truck location reporting.

The system allows fleet managers to choose reporting intervals from a number of plants. On-demand position requests are also available for individual trucks, fleets, and sub-fleets.

Upgraded Tracking Tool

The latest release of StrandWare Inc.'s BackTrack—version 4.3—has 40 new features. BackTrack is an item-tracking application that enables users to combine databases, bar-code labels, reports, and portable data terminals into a customized asset- and inventory-management system. A configurable location database allows each location ID to be customized to track the building address, facility code, room number, and more. (www.strandware.com)

Suite for Business Collaboration

Descartes has released a new business-to-business Collaborative Shipping Suite. The package includes software applications to determine the total landed cost for imported goods, a multimodal freight rate calculator, and systems that handle electronic booking, real-time shipment tracking, and delivery status confirmation. WMS for Small Companies

The IntelliTrack warehouse management system (WMS) from PSC Inc. is geared to small to mid-sized warehouse operations. The application helps users manage labor productivity, inventory accuracy, and space utilization. Event Management Tool

Saltare Leap 2.0 offers a Java-based suite of applications for supply chain event management. Its applications measure events across the network, develop strategies to resolve exceptions, and coordinate the execution of resolution strategies. (www.saltare.com)
