Symbol unveils wireless handheld computer

The new PDT 8100 handheld computer from Symbol Technologies allows both keypad and pen-based data input for data transmission in both wireless wide-area networks (WWANs) and wireless local-area networks (WLANs). The dual-input unit, which is based on the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system, was designed for a number of vertical applications, including transportation and logistics.

Users can either opt for pen-based input in a menu-driven computing environment or select keypad input if commands need to be typed in. WLAN connectivity allows users to send and receive data when in range of a standard 802.11 or 802.11b wireless LAN.

The PDT 8100, which can withstand multiple four-foot drops to concrete, offers an optional high-performance laser bar-code scanner and the StrongArm SA1110 processor. Other features include multiple keyboard options, a 1/4-inch VGA display, a backlit keyboard, and touchscreen stylus entry.

Robotic Systems Designed for Complex Picking Tasks

Swisslog North America has introduced two new robotic handling systems for order picking and batch picking in distribution centers. The first system, the MultiPick system, was designed for the continuous picking of full-case quantities of returnable plastic crates, baskets, bins, totes, and containers. The robot builds mixed-article stacks in exact quantities ordered by the customer and in dropping sequences according to vehicle routing plans.

The second system, the RoboPick system, is designed for distribution based on non-returnable articles. It is designed for the continuous picking of single cases. The robot either picks on a per-order or per-batch basis and releases the cases for palletizing or sorting.
