The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported this week that both carload and intermodal volumes each saw gains for the week ending August 16.
Carload volumes were up 2.8 percent at 304,276, topping the week August 9 at 301,755 and slightly ahead of the week ending August 2 at 304,229.
Intermodal volume for the week ending August 16 was up 5.4 percent at 270,316 containers and trailers, which was ahead of the week ending August 9 at 266,153 and just behind the week ending August 2 at 270,323.
Of the ten carload commodities tracked by the AAR, nine were up annually for the week ending August 16. Petroleum and petroleum products were up 19.5 percent, and metallic ores and minerals were up 11.6 percent.
For the first 33 weeks of 2014, carloads are up 3.7 percent annually at 9,526,136 and intermodal is up 5.8 percent at 8,465,069 trailers and containers.
