The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported that rail carload and intermodal volumes for the week ending January 24 were up annually.
U.S. Carloads were up 5 percent annually at 294,738, which was ahead of the week ending January 17 at 290,963 and the week ending January 10 at 276,573.
Coming off of its first weekly decline in nearly a year, intermodal at 253,317 containers and trailers was up 3 percent compared to the same period a year ago, which trailed the 260,893 from the week ending January 17 and topped the 240,947 from the week ending January 10.
Nine of the ten carload commodities tracked by the AAR were up annually for the week ending January 24, with coal up 115,369 carloads or 3.8 percent and nonmetallic minerals up 34,246 carloads or 22.2 percent.
On a year-to-date basis, carloads are up 4.1 percent at 862,274 carloads, and intermodal is down 0.8 percent at 755,157 intermodal units.
