Increasing annual volumes remained intact for carload and intermodal for the week ending September 6, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Carload volumes were up 2.7 percent at 286,002 topping the week August 9 at 301,755 and slightly ahead of the week ending August 2 at 304,229. This was below the week ending August 30 at 305,571 and the week ending August 23 at 300,505.
Intermodal volume for the week ending September 6 was up 4.5 percent at 239,142 trailers and containers, which was below the 273,458 units recorded the week ending August 30, and 265,761 units from the week ending August 23.
Of the ten carload commodities tracked by the AAR, nine were up annually for the week ending September 6. Petroleum and petroleum products were up 31.1 percent, and metallic ores and minerals were up 13.1 percent. Coal dipped 5.4 percent.
For the first 36 weeks of 2014, carloads are up 3.6 percent annually at 10,418,394 and intermodal is up 5.6 percent at 9,243,430 trailers and containers.
