AAR reports weekly declines for carload and intermodal volumes

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported that rail carload and intermodal volumes for the week ending February 21 were down compared to the corresponding week in 2014.

U.S. Carloads were down 7.8 percent annually at 259,544, which was below the weeks ending February 14 and February 7 at 288,959 and 273,648, respectively.

Only one of the ten carload commodities tracked by the AAR was up annually for the week ending February 21, with grain up 4 percent to 22,877 carloads.

Intermodal volume was off 15.7 percent for the week ending February 21 at 213,617 containers and trailers, which was below the weeks ending February 14 and February 7 at 236,265 and 237,915, respectively.

On a year-to-date basis, carloads are up 3.7 percent at 1,982,993, and intermodal is down 2.3 percent at 1,692,864 intermodal units.
