Air cargo/parcel shipping: DHL preps to add staff at U.S. hub

DHL Express said it plans to hire roughly 300 employees at its principal hub and gateway at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)

Citing positive package shipping trends, express delivery and logistics services provider DHL Express said it plans to hire roughly 300 employees at its principal hub and gateway at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG).

Effective Tuesday, June 8, DHL will welcome applicants to apply for so-called “International Service Agent” positions in package sort, ground and ramp operations. The company will hire 200 workers at the CVG hub in June and another 100 in July.

DHL moved its U.S. hub operations to CVG in July 2009. DHL’s U.S. business focuses on international import and export offerings in major metropolitan areas. It ceased U.S. domestic-only air and ground services at the end of January 2009, due largely to the ongoing uphill battle it faced competing with industry giants UPS and FedEx for market share.

The company worked out of CVG from 1983 until it moved to Wilmington, Ohio in 2005. The DHL hub at CVG opened in the fourth quarter of 2002. And last week it officially donated Air Park to Wilmington, Ohio. The air park will be redeveloped for future use as an airport/commerce park.

“Significant positive trends in package volumes coupled with a need to keep our hub operation adequately staffed for peak shipping periods has opened up hundreds of opportunities for local workers,” said Michael Munn, Vice President of Human Resources for DHL Express, in a statement.  “Most of the available positions are part-time and represent opportunities for future advancement within DHL Express.”

Now that the deal, which had to clear several regulatory hurdles in multiple countries, is official, FedEx executives were able to speak a little bit more freely, albeit being somewhat guarded in regards to certain integration specifics at the same time.

In March, the SCI came in at 0.4, which FTR described as “a near neutral reading” on the heels of four months of more favorable market trends for shippers.
