DAP Technologies partners with Omni-ID for first rugged tablet with both active and passive RFID

Single device now handles asset tracking, inventory management and service histories.

Auto-identification technology leaders DAP Technologies, a unit of Roper Industries, and Omni-ID, today the launch of a new series of mobile tablets that incorporate both active and passive radio frequency identification (RFID) reader capabilities – an industry first.

Because most companies use a combination of auto-identification technologies incorporating both passive and active RFID tagging to track and locate assets, they have been forced to use multiple types of readers to facilitate this process. Now, with the integration of both active and passive RFID technology on a rugged device suitable for harsh environments, markets such as oil and gas, off-shore drilling, warehouse and logistics, transportation, or field service can have the ease and convenience of one device.

“Our customers are constantly looking for ways to simplify and create process efficiency – today that means taking technology out of the office and bringing it directly to the field,” said Ed Nabrotzky, EVP Sales (Americas) and Product Development for Omni-ID. “The all-in-one approach that these DAP tablets provide — including the ruggedized form factor, combined with the intuitive interface and auto-ID functionality to track assets no matter what they’re tagged with — is particularly appealing to our base of harsh environment customers,” added Nabrotzky. “So appealing in fact, that these tablets are already being deployed in volume to one of our high visibility customers in the oil and gas industry.”

Today, the DAP M9000 series of rugged mobile tablets incorporates RFID reader capability for passive, active or both and are powered by DAP mobility and Omni-ID active reader technology. The combination of these technologies delivers customers a rugged, easy to use tablet that provides users with the freedom of carrying only one mobile device to track assets, collect information, synchronize systems, report data and receive and respond to messages.

● Track and manage every asset for accurate inventory and location of work in process
● Inventory management ensures timely and efficient asset deployment to the field
● Automatically log and maintain all service history for employee safety and to certify compliance (audits)

David Molesworth, president of DAP Technologies, explains, “The M9000 series uniquely helps businesses improve efficiency and increase capability by delivering a solution that can truly multi task, superseding legacy handheld devices with limited functionality.”

Designed specifically for harsh environments such as yard management, manufacturing and logistics — these products are built for safety and designed for simplicity of use.

● Windows based application for easy integration (Windows 7)
● Easy to carry or mount rugged form factor for multipurpose use
● Sunlight viewable touchscreen
● Optimized power management for extended use without docking
● RFID and barcode reader capability
● IP 67 rated and intrinsically safe

“Mobility and automation matter more than ever in today’s industrial markets,” stated Michael Liard, vice president of AutoID at VDC Research. “According to our research, flexibility, form and function are leading RFID reader end-user selection requirements, especially in harsh environments. Affording customers a choice between passive and active in one device is a highly innovate approach to RFID-enabling mobile devices such as tablets.”
