The average price per gallon of diesel gasoline increased for the eighth consecutive week, according to data issued by the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) this week.
With a 6.8-cent increase, the average price per gallon now stands at $3.239 per gallon. This is the highest weekly average since the week of December 29, 2014, when the average stood at $3.213.
During this seven-week stretch of increases, the average has been above the $3 per gallon mark each week. And during that span the average has risen a cumulative 22.9 cents.
Compared to the same week a year ago, the diesel average is up 69.5 cents.
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil is currently trading at $71.17 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Last week, the average was $70 per barrel, which marked the first time WTI crude had eclipsed the $70 per barrel mark going back to November 2014.
