Industrial Truck Association sponsors third annual National Forklift Safety Day

Representatives from OSHA, National Safety Council, chairman of the OSHA congressional subcommittee and key industry representatives to build awareness in Washington D.C.

The third annual National Forklift Safety Day, sponsored by the Industrial Truck Association, will be held on June 14th in Washington D.C.

NFSD serves as a focal point for manufacturers to highlight the safe use of forklifts and the importance of operator training. The day provides an opportunity for the industry to educate customers, the public, and government officials about safe forklift operation.

Since forklifts originated in the United States in 1917, annual U.S. sales have grown to more than 190,000 units. According to the ITA, a well-maintained forklift operated by a well-trained worker is critical to the country’s $165 billion material handling industry.

Forklift safety has many aspects. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enforces regulations governing the manufacture and operation of powered industrial trucks. The Industrial Truck Standards Development Foundation, which is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), administers the development of consensus safety standards for manufacturing and using industrial trucks. These standards reflect the considered judgment of industry, government safety officials, users, and private safety experts on issues of forklift safety.

OSHA has incorporated these consensus standards by reference into the federal regulations. Updating the consensus standards and working to have them recognized in the federal regulations is an ongoing process. But safety doesn’t come from writing good standards and regulations, the ITA argues, it comes from knowing and following them. National Forklift Safety Day is about enhancing awareness and renewing a commitment to forklift safety.

National Forklift Safety Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on June 14, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Capitol Hill, 400 New Jersey Avenue, Washington, D.C. The event will feature speakers from OSHA and the National Safety Council, the Chairman of the Congressional Subcommittee having jurisdictional oversight for OSHA, and key industry representatives.
