The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported this week that both carload and intermodal volumes again grew annually for the week ending September 20.
Carload volumes saw a 5 percent jump compared to the same week a year ago at 302,178, which was ahead of the week ending September 13 at 300,388 and the week ending September 6 at 286,002.
On the intermodal side, trailer and container volumes were up 6.5 percent at 279,777, which edged out the week ending September 13 at 279,052, as well as the week ending September 6 at 239,142. This most recent weekly tally now stands as a new record-high for U.S. railroads, topping the week ending September 13, which was the previous high, according to the AAR.
Of the ten carload commodities tracked by the AAR, nine were up annually for the week ending September 20. Petroleum and petroleum products were up 26.8 percent, and grain was up 23.2 percent. Coal dipped 5.4 percent.
For the first 38 weeks of 2014, carloads are up 3.5 percent annually at 11,020,960 and intermodal is up 5.7 percent at 9,802,259 trailers and containers.
