Modex 2014: Technical educators to learn more about material handling & logistics training programs

The second annual event is presented by Modex show sponsor MHI in support of its Technical Career Education Program (TCEP).

Educators, administrators and students from technical high schools, colleges and community colleges around the country will attend Wednesday, March 19’s day-long Technical Career Education Conference. The second annual event is presented by Modex show sponsor MHI in support of its Technical Career Education Program (TCEP).

“The goal of the conference is to share MHI’s resources with these program leaders and offer them an opportunity to partner with MHI as they educate and develop tomorrow’s workforce. It also gives students an opportunity to see exhibitors’ solutions first-hand,” said Carmen Murphy, MHI’s education coordinator.

Among this year’s conference speakers are:

• Tim Lawrence, executive director for SkillsUSA, presenting data on skilled youth headed into the future workforce.
• Brian Devine, division vice president of ProLogistix, reviewing the findings of WERC’s national survey of hourly warehouse workers and their job search priorities.
• Phil Jones, senior manager operations and vendor relations for Target Corp., speaking on the need for automation education and training curriculums in universities and high schools to address the requirements of today’s manufacturing and distribution facilities, as well as to support the supply chain of the future.

“MHI is committed to building the workforce of tomorrow,” Murphy added. “The TCEP program does this through the ongoing development of classroom materials, establishing networking opportunities within the industry, instructor education programs, and support of academic programs.”

To that end, Murphy said that MHI will also be announcing the publication of the fourth TCEP Fundamentals of Warehousing & Distribution textbook at Modex. Entitled “Developing Your Soft Skills. Making a Successful Leap from the Classroom to the Workplace,” the book supports TCEP’s curriculum for high schools, technical and career centers, community colleges, Job Corps, DECA programs, correctional organizations with training and education components, and the United States military.

Conference participants will also take a special tour of the show floor to specifically visit the key technologies most often employed in a live working warehouse lab. More information about the TCEP program can be found at http://www.mhi.org/tcep.
