ODFL expands in Detroit area

Less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation services provider Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) recently announced it has expanded its service into Canada with the relocation and expansion of its Detroit Service Center in Troy, Michigan.

Company officials said ODFL has had a presence in Troy for 11 years, and is now in a larger, state-of-the-art facility on a 16-acre site also in Troy and added that it is strategically located along the I-75 corridor which allows for overnight service into parts of Ontario.

“In recent years, Old Dominion has experienced an increased demand for our premium service,” a company spokesman told LM. “Old Dominion relocated and expanded the Detroit Service Center as part of a $90-$120 million investment nationwide in real estate purchases and expansion projects in 2012. With this new facility, we will continue to grow our reach. This project has been planned for two years and construction took nine months to complete.”

ODFL said that this new location also has a repair shop and provides direct service into various cities, including Auburn Hills, Chesterfield, Ferndale, Lapeer, Oak Park, Pt. Huron, Madison Heights, Royal Oak, and Warren. ODFL has seven Michigan-based terminals and recently relocated its Grand Rapids Service Center into a larger facility.

The ODFL spokesperson said the new and expanded facility allows the company to react more quickly to customers’ needs and meet the steady increase of customer demands in the greater Detroit area. The Detroit facility is a complete solution center for direct service to points nationally and globally, he noted.

While the spokesperson declined to provide a specific number for how many customers it will have out of this location, he did say that the service center will not only benefit the customers located in cities it serves directly from the Detroit Service Center, but also throughout its network.

With this expansion the Detroit Service Center now has 48 employees. And with the relocation, Old Dominion increased its workforce at the Detroit terminal by 20 percent.
ODFL announced today that it had relocated and expanded its Pasco Service Center in Washington state. The company said that the new service center, built on a seven-acre lot, is strategically located near Interstates 82, 84 and 90. Old Dominion operates five service centers in Washington.
