United States rail carload and intermodal volumes were mixed for the week ending April 4, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported this week.
U.S. carloads were down 1.5 percent compared to the same week last year at 277,894. This was below the 301,317 recorded during the week ending March 28 and the 284,618 from the week ending March 21.
Two of the ten carload commodities tracked by the AAR were up annually for the week ending April 4. Grain was up 5.7 percent to 20,868 carloads, and forest products were up 2.3 percent to 11,215 carloads. Coal dropped 11.7 percent to 102,298 carloads.
Intermodal volume was up 3.8 percent annually at 271,127 containers and trailers. This topped the week ending March 28 at 265,188 units and was below the week ending March 21 at 277,854 units.
On a year-to-date basis through the first 13 weeks of 2015, rail carloads are down 0.2 percent annually at 3,644,976, and intermodal is up 0.4 percent at 3,289,725 units.
