The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported that rail carload and intermodal volumes for the week ending January 17 were mixed.
U.S. Carloads were up 0.3 percent annually at 290,963, which was ahead of the week ending January 10 at 276,573 and the week ending January 3 at 260,526.
Intermodal at 260,893 containers and trailers dropped 2.4 percent compared to the same week last year and was ahead of the week ending January 10 at 240,947 and the week ending January 3 at 186,675.
Five of the ten carload commodities tracked by the AAR were up annually for the week ending January 17, with grain up 25,062 carloads or 18.2 percent and chemicals up 30,947 carloads or 4.6 percent.
On a year-to-date basis, carloads are up 3.7 percent at 567,536 carloads, and intermodal is down 0.3 percent at 501,840 intermodal units.
