UPS expands southern California delivery facility

Transportation and logistics titan UPS recently announced it has kicked off a $17.5 million expansion of its Menifee, California-based delivery center in an effort to handle increased shipping volume from regional customers.

This facility is expected to open by the end of this month, according to UPS officials and will be comprised of 49,407 square-feet and 10 tractor-trailer doors and room for 108 delivery vehicles. They added that almost 35 delivery routes were transferred from its Riverside and San Bernardino facilities. Prior to expansion, the 18,753 square foot facility housed 47 package delivery trucks and had four tractor-trailer doors.

“We’re ready with more capacity to serve customers’ eastward growth in Southern California’s Inland Empire,” said Noel Massie, president of the South California District.  “The growth of warehouse and distribution operations, as well as residential construction in the region, has necessitated the need to expand our facilities and operations.”

UPS spokesman Justin Luther told LM that UPS has seen greater demand for its services, fueled by growth in this area, and this expanded facility will help meet that demand. And he added that this project has been in the works for several years, and this building will address the permanent, long-term needs of its customers in this market.

“This expanded facility enables us to address volume growth with greater efficiency and continue to provide excellent service to our customers,” he said. “As an example, the expanded facility will increase processing capacity from 4,000 pieces to 10,000 pieces per hour.”

Luther also pointed out that this effort is more about we are positioning UPS well to handle the tremendous residential and commercial growth in this area, not only throughout the upcoming peak season, but for many years ahead as well.
