China's Recent Quality-related Issues
August 24, 2007

If you've been anywhere near a newspaper or a television over the last couple of months, you know that there has been significant coverage in the US on a handful of high profile quality issues from products made in China. In response to this, the Chinese government has just "declared war" on tainted products. Indeed China is a vast country and this type of response will take significant time and resources to yield meaningful results, but it is a meaningful step forward.

For logistics managers who work with Chinese companies and purchase Chinese goods, this new initiative should be follow-up closely and applauded. See the article for more details.

I applaude China for handeling its problem with its products responsibly. The investment in quality assurance research and tough industrial standards will help restore consumer confidence in the global market.

The Mattel story has made both the governments realize the vital need of having a relook on the current quality control policy. This is definitely a welcome move and will benefit the society at large going forward.

Assistant commerce minister Wang in Thursday''s briefing reiterated China''s view that only a tiny portion of its exports were substandard. "We adopt a conscientious attitude towards the quality problems that have emerged with Chinese products," Wang told the briefing. "Even though only one percent of all products have quality issues... we will earnestly investigate all problem enterprises." China has previously said that less than one percent of its exports have any quality problems. Say, U.S. needs to strengthen the export of China in order to guarantee its trade balance from the other side. Welcome to AmeriChinaB2B(www,

MICHAEL BAKER commented:

Not only did they declare war on these tainted products they executed a man for the recent problems. Do we really want to do business with these people. It is high time we pulled back from being dependent on this for our corporate profits. We in America really have lost site of the middle class and it is going to come around full circle. We are already witnessing the first cycle of a problem it is time to fix it.
