Finding hope in a bleak job market
Widely regarded as a parcel express visionary, Jerry Hempstead has hardly been taking it easy since leaving DHL a few years ago. Besides being quoted regularly in the trade press, he’s often invited to share his views on education and “life preparation” by industry associations worldwide. After having a look at a recent presntation given to a Council of Supply Chain Management Professional’s roundtable, it’s easy to see why.
“The most important thing when searching for a job in tough economic times is to retain a positive attitude,” he says, noting that even in a job market with 10 percent unemployment, there’s 90 percent employment.
“There is an average of over 3 million jobs available in the US per month — and each job seeker is looking for one,” he adds. “Those are pretty good odds.”
And if this isn’t enough to motivate us, he suggests we consider that Mayo Clinic researchers find that optimistic people live nearly 20 percent longer than pessimists facing similar health challenges.
Still feeling down? Hemstead has the answer: Psyche Yourself!
