Is Punta Colonet Dead?

August 25, 2009

Lost in the discussion on the Panama Canal expansion, is the impact it may have on the plans for a “mega-port” at Punta Colonet in Baja California. As reported in LM, Mexico’s President Felipe Calderón placed a high priority in this project along with others to invest $234 billion in the country’s infrastructure over the next half-decade. Will the public-private financing of such an ambitious undertaking move forward now that the Canal’s own financing has been put together? Many industry analysts say “no,” observing that a new trade transpacific trade route will no longer be necessary.

A port can last decades if not centuries. It's like saying the empire state building should have been canceled because of the great depression, when it was finished ahead of schedule & under budget. Doubtless still paying off nicely.

This is like reading your own death notice. Punta Colonet is alive and well and the Mexican government will issue permits to start construction by December 2009. As a supplier of workers housing, sanitary facilities, cantinas and offices we are preparing for a major run on our modular units and will be revving up production to be able to supply this. On August 17, Juan Molinar Horcasitas, head of the Secretariat of Communications and Transport, said that despite budget cuts and the economic crisis, the port project at Punta Colonet is ongoing. He said a new timetable for the mega-port will be announced within 30 days, and that 4 major corporations have expressed continuing interest in constructing the project. With an entire city of 200,000+ being built from scratch, domains (Internet addresses) like PuntaColonetYellowPages.com, PuntaColonetInfo.com, PortColonetBay.com, VisitPuntaColonet.com, MegapuertoDePuntaColonet.com,and PuntaColonetLawyer.com will be worth thousands of dollars as marketing tools.
