North American "green" movement wins Scandinavian support
Leave it to an iconic Danish shipping company to be among the first to echo making environmental considerations a major part of its business plan.
‘The shipping industry directly impacts the environment in the communities in which we work and live,” noted Maersk Inc. spokesmen in Copenhagen. “We are committed to supporting efforts to minimize and mitigate this.”
As reported in LM, the United States and Canada submitted a proposal to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the leading regulatory agency for the global shipping industry, outlining further proposed MARPOL regulation for ships operating within the waters of these two countries. These new regulations would establish additional restrictions and guidelines for ships serving the vital U.S. and Canadian marketplace.
Maersk Line supports the U.S. and Canadian application and strongly encourages the IMO to address these regulatory developments at their upcoming meeting in July as a priority.
“We view the actions taken by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Canadian authorities as the next logical step in addressing a vital issue facing our industry,” said Maersk chairman John Clancy.
