Time to reconsider nuclear energy

June 4, 2009

Has “going green” been taken to extremes lately? That’s the contention of Barry Asmus, Ph.D., a senior Economist for the prestigious National Center for Policy Analysis. In his keynote address last week at the Transportation Marketing and Communication’s (TMCA) annual Conference in San Diego, he said that a good many people have gone mad on the subject.
“And ignoring some of the obvious solutions,” he said. “For example, windmills. Give me a break!”
According to Asmus, it would require a windmill farm the size of Connecticut to provide enough power for New York City alone.
“And what if the wind dies?” he asked. “No wind today, sorry! No power. Take the day off everyone!”
A more reasonable alternative, he said, would be to develop nuclear plants –  as France and other leading industrial countries have been doing lately — and deal with the relatively small problem of nuclear waste disposal as it arises.
The Asmus speech — “America’s Economic Future: Six Unstoppable Trends” – was a positive and engaging part of the conference, and demonstrated TMCA’s dedication to education. A major part of the association’s mission is to foster new ways of thinking and communicating the most urgent issues related to logistics and the supply chain.
Kudos to the team responsible for staging this great event.

FYI: Wind has it's place too, but not for baseload. If you're wondering how a US nuclear plant really operates, see "Rad Decision", a free online book from a long-time industry engineer at RadDecision.blogspot.com
