A downturn in the global economy: good for air cargo rates?

Many air cargo shippers are telling us that rates will be softening as economic growth slackens in many parts of the so-called “developing world.” China’s recent quality control (or lack thereof) may also have a negative impact on this mode as well, say analysts. Will air cargo be an attractive option to ocean for more high value goods? The smart money says…

Only to a minor extent. Fuel surcharges, expected to increase into next year, are more severe on air rates than on ocean and their bunker charges. Thus the difference should actually widen.
