Free Trade Tops the G-20 Summit's Agenda

September 19, 2009

While logistics professionals are focusing on supply chain issues at CSCMP’s annual conference in Chicago, our attention may soon shift to an event featuring leaders of the nations and organizations comprising the G-20.

The Pittsburgh G-20 Summit will bring together important industrial and emerging-market countries from all regions of the world, at a time when many shippers are concerned about a new era of trade protectionism. According to trade analysts, the situation is made worse by the fact that we are still dealing with an ongoing global economic downturn

Indeed, the new U.S. tariffs on Chinese tire imports could escalate disputes between the two countries if President Obama does not make a forceful argument in favor of unfettered commerce.

Meanwhile, logisticians and their constituents will be doing business as usual, anticipating an economic recovery and positioning themselves for new opportunities here and abroad.
