PARCEL Forum Pre-conference Workshop: GREENing the Logistics Process
Date: October 6, 2008
Location: JohnsonDiversey Distribution Center
This unique workshop presented by Mark Taylor, CLO for RedRoller and Vera Angelico, AIA, NCARB, and LEED-certified architect will feature a tour of the JohnsonDiversey Distribution Center, the largest LEED-certified distribution center in the United States and an SC Johnson Company. This facility just earned LEED Gold, one of the highest ratings for environmental leadership. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the nationally accepted standard for high performance green buildings that balance environmental responsibility, resource efficiency and the comfort and well-being of the workforce.
Attendees will board a tour bus in the morning and spend the little more than an hour trip to the JohnsonDiversey Distribution Center “in-session”. This interactive workshop is geared toward C-level logistics professionals who are charged with understanding how their companies are impacting the environment and how their actions are perceived by their customers. To date, more than 1,200 corporations have signed on to the Global Reporting Initiative and the logistics industry can make a major “green” impact throughout the parcel process.
The tour of JohnsonDiversey Distribution Center will showcase how they utilize a state-of-the-art ventilation system and fans to cool the building in the summer. How they incorporated a brilliantly white TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) roof and extra insulation at R-27 to help reduce the solar heat gain within the building. The use of low-flow automatic-shutoff water fixtures, waterless urinals, and no landscaping irrigation which resulted in a 51% savings in water and how more than 70% of the 38-acre site has been restored using native and adaptive plantings, which not only require no irrigation, but also reduce maintenance costs.
The building also utilizes fluorescent, high-bay fixtures with daylight and motion-responsive controls. Combined with a high-solids floor finish and a white-painted interior, these features improve lighting quality while driving down energy costs. And, how more than 34,000 tons of bottom ash, a byproduct of coal-fired power plants, were reclaimed from a local landfill and used for the building’s sub-base. Lastly, attendees will learn how they recycled 941 of the 964 tons of waste generated during the construction of the building for a remarkable 98 percent recycle rate.
