Global logistics services provider and freight forwarder C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc. said earlier today it has reached an agreement to acquire Chicago-based freight forwarder Phoenix International Inc. for $571.5 million in cash and about $63.5 million in CHRW stock.
Ongoing difficult economic conditions in Europe continue to paint a difficult picture of a continent slipping into recession, according to the most recent edition of the Global Port Tracker report from Hackett Associates and the Bremen Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics.

The price per gallon of diesel fell 4.9 cents to $4.086 per gallon, marking the single largest weekly decline since falling 5.1 cents to $3.678 per gallon the week of June 25.

Business conditions for shippers appear to be on the precipice of a downward slope, according to the monthly Shippers Conditions Index from freight transportation consultancy FTR Associates.
As explained in a previous Boston Consulting Group report, when the many risks and hidden costs of managing extended global supply chains are taken into account, it will be just as economical to manufacture many products in the U.S. if those goods are sold in the U.S.

Zepol Corporation, a leading trade intelligence company, reports that U.S. import shipment volume for August, measured in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), is down from July by 3 percent and 0.3 percent from August of 2011
Carload volume—at 291,350—was down 2.9 percent annually, and intermodal—at 251,720 trailers and containers—were up 3.9 percent.
