The United States Chamber of Commerce has rolled out the inaugural edition of its Transportation Performance Index (TPI), which it said closely examines how United States transportation infrastructure is serving the needs of the country’s economy and business community.

Earlier this week, the House of Representatives voted to extend the current authorization for federal aviation programs through December 31, 2010 in what would be the 16th extension voted by Congress since the authorization’s scheduled expiration date in 2007, according to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Railroad volumes returned to their recent trend of record-breaking volumes for the week ending September 18, with intermodal volumes on U.S. railways setting a new 2010 record along with containers hitting its highest level ever, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

During the depths of the recession, the trucking industry found itself in a situation where shippers clearly had the upper hand when it came to pricing. This was true in both the truckload (TL) and less-than-truckload (LTL) sectors. But since that time the economy has shown some gradual signs of a recovery, which subsequently led to a rate recovery of sorts on the TL side. Now, it appears, the LTL sector is catching up.

The battle for increasing truck size and weights received a shot of good news, when the White House last week has agreed to a request from Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, to permanently enact a pilot program allowing trucks weighing up to 100,000 pounds to travel on federal interstate highways in Maine.
