The once-beleaguered $35 billion less-than-truckload (LTL) sector, beset by stagnant growth and lackluster profits for much of the past decade, is enjoying a revival. Mostly because of the strong industrial and retail economy, as well as tightness in capacity due to the lack of any new entrants in the past 10 years, the LTL sector is poised for one of its best profit years since at least 2004, industry executives and analysts say.

One of the survey’s main findings was that respondents’ economic outlook heading into 2015 was optimistic but not as optimistic as they were heading into 2014, with 55 percent feeling good about things in 2015, which was down fro 2014’s 64 percent.

Commerce reported that February retail sales at $437.0 billion were down 0.6 percent compared to January and up 1.7 percent compared to January 2014, and the NRF said that February retail sales, which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants, dipped 0.2 percent seasonally-adjusted month-to-month compared to January and increased 3 percent annually on an unadjusted basis.

At 123.8, the Freight TSI was down 0.2 percent compared to December and 29.9 percent higher than April 2009’s low of 94.6, which was during the depths of the recession.
