Container shipping companies have had plenty of reasons to avoid inbound calls to California’s Port of Oakland and Port of Richmond this year, including labor disruptions caused by truckers and longshoremen. But the latest concern is being generated by a group of waterfront professionals who are only too eager to work…for extraordinary salaries.

Putting the renewed strength in the truckload market into a very positive perspective is a report issued by Avondale Partners analyst Donald Broughton, which was released yesterday. Entitled, “Q2’15 Trucking Capacity; Goldilocks Era Continues,” Broughton explained that in the second quarter only 70 truckload fleets failed, or exited the business. That number may seem high to some, but it is not, especially when you consider that the second quarter of 2014 saw more than five times as many truckload carriers, 375 to be exact, exit the business.

Truckload brokerage services are in high demand by shippers, and this comes at a time in which diesel prices have been dropping for more than two months, coupled with available truckload capacity looser than it was a year ago at this time a year ago.

Senator Tom Carper has introduced a bill call the TRAFFIC Relief Act, which pledges to raise U.S. gasoline and diesel taxes (that have remained at current levels of 23.4 cents for diesel and 18.4 cents for gasoline since 1993), as well as expand tax credits, too.
