As the calendar turns to 2012, along with it comes another year of reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones, and, of course, learning things about our multi-faceted logistics sector. And one of the primary ways of doing this is attending the various trade shows and conferences within the industry. Unless my calendar is playing tricks on me, that begins next week, when I head down to Atlanta for the SMC3 “Jump Start 2012” conference for the third straight year.

As has been the case in recent months, truckload pricing remains solid for carriers, according to the most recent edition of The Cass Truckload Linehaul Index from Cass Information Systems and Avondale Partners.
Following a six-week stretch in which the price per gallon for diesel gasoline headed down, priced headed up 4.5 cents this week to $3.828 per gallon, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Railroad and intermodal volumes continued to move in the right direction in 2011, according to data released by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
As if U.S. West Coast ports didn’t have enough to worry about, a new competitor is surfacing South of the Border to challenge them.
The once tenuous situation regarding a potential railroad strike received more good news last week, when the National Railway Labor Conference said that three more railroad unions have ratified new contracts with the Class Is.
