The Institute of Supply Management reported that manufacturing activity in August was up slightly compared to July.

Coming off of July, which saw its first decrease in five months in conjunction with other indices declining, the Cass Information Systems Freight Index switched back to growth mode in August.

Exports of U.S. goods and services increased 17.7 percent during the first six months of 2010, according to data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis of the U.S. Commerce Department.

Third-party logistics (3PL) services provider Schneider Logistics, a subsidiary of Schneider International, said it will sell its United States- and China-based freight forwarding and customs house brokerage businesses to Norbert Denressangle, a Lyon, Paris-based provider of transportation, logistics, and freight forwarding services.

Even though reported sales of used commercial vehicles dropped 20 percent from June to July, unit sales were up year-over-year at 43 percent ahead of 2009, according to data from ACT Research, a provider of data and analysis for trucks and other commercial vehicles.

Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was up 37.6 percent in June 2010 compared to June 2009, increasing to $69.9 billion, according to data released by the United States Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

While it may be too early to call it a definitive trend, it is clear diesel prices of late have been taking a turn south, according to data released this week by the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA).
