The United States is facing “a massive infrastructure deficit” that will cripple the U.S. economy and stunt the economic recovery, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has declared.
Various cargo and port productivity issues have prompted the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) to call on leadership at the Port of New York/New Jersey over disruptions occurring at the port which RILA Vice President, Government Affairs Kelly Kolb said in a letter to the port’s Executive Director Patrick J. Foye and Deputy Executive Director Deborah L. Grammiccioni have had damaging consequences on the delivery of retailers’ goods.
The impact of this once in a lifetime winter simply cannot be understated when viewing how it has impacted myriad facets of daily life and freight transportation operations, too, of course. What Old Man Winter has wrought early in the year looking at metrics like sluggish retail sales and declining truck tonnage is obvious to say the least. And while it will not last forever, its impact remains intact for now anyway.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) truck tonnage in January dropped 4.3 percent, following a 0.8 percent drop in December, and the not seasonally-adjusted (NSA) index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by fleets before any seasonal adjustment was 122.3 in January.
