Retailers concerned by the lack of a West Coast longshoremen’s contract will continue to bring merchandise into the country at above-average levels this month but volume will drop from the record set in August, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

Nine principles supply chain and logistics stakeholders are calling for in the next surface transportation reauthorization legislation were formally issued this week by the Freight Stakeholders Coalition, a group of nearly 20 shipping and transportation provider/planning groups collaborating to support U.S. freight mobility.

In the 20 years since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) took effect, trade between the US and Canada has increased by 300 %, and the countries are each other's top trading partners. A key provision of the agreement is the elimination of duties on eligible products traveling between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Eligible products "originate" in one of the three countries, and NAFTA lays out detailed "rules" as to what constitutes origination. Determining NAFTA eligibility, and knowing how to apply for benefits can be time-consuming and complicated.
Market conditions continue to favor trucking carriers, due in large part to tight capacity, according to the most recent edition of the Trucking Conditions Index (TCI) from freight transportation forecasting firm FTR.
