In an effort to have closer proximity to one of the biggest technology regions of the United States, Class I railroad carrier Union Pacific said this week that it has opened up an Austin, Texas-based information technology center.

Commerce reported that November retail sales at $412.4 billion were up 0.3 percent compared to October and up 3.7 percent compared to November 2011. And the NRF reported that ovember retail sales, which exclude autos, gas stations, and restaurants, were up 0.8 percent on a seasonally-adjusted basis from October and up 4.4 percent on an unadjusted basis annually.

The much-maligned Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program received another setback this week, when the Department of Defense said in a Federal Register notice that it “does not meet DOD security standards and cannot be used as of January 29, 2013.”

While Air cargo volumes have crept along at a snail’s pace during most of 2012. The year is apparently going to end without a push for last minute electronics and other higher value retail goods to fill the space on cargo planes to capacity.

The BTS said that the October Freight TSI at 107.1 is 13.6 percent higher than April 2009’s low point of 94.3 during the recession.

The report stated that this development came to light in the form of an internal e-mail by a FedEx sales executive in an internal e-mail which was unsealed in a class action lawsuit filed in a federal court in Memphis last year, which claims FedEx Corp. and FedEx Corporate Services overcharged commercial and government customers up to $3 each for millions of delivered packages.
