The BTS said that the June Freight TSI at 109.5 is 16.1 percent higher than April 2009’s low point of 94.3 during the recession and is down 3.9 percent from the December 2011 reading of 114.0, which represents the all-time high since BTS first began collecting data in 1990.
The heading of the July Cass Freight Index Report from Cass Information Systems, “Slow growth in freight; slow growth in the economy,” aptly sums up the current freight environment, which continues to flatten out and lack true signs of growth.

Second quarter intermodal loadings—at 3,716,321—were up 5.2 percent annually and IANA officials said it marks the best quarterly result in a year, with the annual growth rate topping the first quarter’s 2.9 percent gain.
