A new piece of bipartisan legislation rolled out this week by Representatives Chip Cravaack (R-MN) and Tim Bishop (D-NY), entitled H.R. 4350, the Safe Skies Act of 2012, ensures that “pilot rest requirements apply to all air cargo operations.”

While prospects of a new long-term transportation bill remain dim, the United States House of Representatives yesterday signed off another extension—the tenth since September 30, 2009—to keep federal transportation funding intact at current spending levels for 90 days through the end of September when the current one expires.

It is no surprise that when it comes to freight transportation market share, trucking leads the pack. But what can be surprising is by how much of a margin the trucking sector outpaces its freight transportation brethren. This was prominently highlighted in the 2012 edition of the American Trucking Associations “ATA American Trucking Trends,” which the ATA released this week.
Class I railroad carrier CSX last night reported record first quarter earnings of $449 million and $0.43 per share. The earnings per share performance exceeded Wall Street expectations of $0.38 per share and was up 23 percent annually.
It is the fine print, execution and enforcement of the year-old CSA program that is irking trucking industry leaders and officials.

TransCore’s DAT North American Freight Index, which reflects spot market freight availability on its network of load boards in the United States and Canada, posted a 40 percent gain in March over February and was down 6.1 percent annually compared to March 2011.
One week after the price per gallon of diesel reached its highest mark since checking in at $4.208 per gallon the week of August 18, 2008, the price dropped for the second time in the last three weeks, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA).
